The Sunstorm Within, Original Artwork UV art
The Sunstorm Within
Inspired by an extraordinary late-November drive, The Sunstorm Within began with a moment when the sky appeared almost electrically alive. As I travelled beneath it, the colour of the sunset spilled across the road and reflected over the bonnet of the car, creating the feeling that I was moving not simply through a landscape, but through an atmosphere charged with emotion.
That reflection became central to the painting. The car’s surface catches and distorts the light of the sky, holding something of the intensity of the moment — exhilaration, tension, wonder and the strange stillness that can exist inside something visually overwhelming.
In daylight, the work presents itself as a luminous, expressive landscape, rich with movement, layered colour and atmospheric depth. Under UV light, however, another presence emerges. Fluorescent pigments reveal hidden passages and unexpected colour relationships, transforming the painting into a more immersive and electric experience. Selected elements continue to glow in darkness, allowing the work to shift again as the surrounding light disappears.
This changing character is integral to the meaning of The Sunstorm Within. It reflects the idea that what we first see is rarely the whole story — that beneath the visible surface, both in landscape and in ourselves, there can be another layer of energy, memory and emotion waiting to be revealed.
Created through layered acrylic, fluorescent pigments and expressive textured mark-making, the painting moves between observed landscape and internal experience. A fleeting sunset becomes something more enduring: a record of a moment, a journey, and the emotional imprint it left behind.
