Elmúlás - Impermanence Original Artwork
Elmúlás - Impermanence
Acrylic and oil on box canvas • 80 × 30 cm • Original artwork, Framed
Elmúlás is a Hungarian word that is difficult to translate with a single English word. It can mean passing, fading, transience or impermanence the quiet understanding that nothing remains unchanged forever.
This painting was inspired by the passing of the father of one of my childhood friends. His loss made me reflect on how suddenly a familiar presence can become a memory, and how the people who shape our lives continue to exist through the traces they leave behind.
At the centre of the painting, a solitary figure appears to dissolve into the surrounding space, becoming part of the atmosphere rather than standing apart from it. Around the figure, layered circular forms suggest memories, moments, energy and fragments of a life continuing beyond physical presence.
The work is not only about loss, but about transition. It reflects on the idea that people, experiences and emotions do not simply disappear; they remain with us in altered forms, carried through memory, influence and connection.
The elongated format reinforces the sense of movement through time, while the layered surface and repeated circular motifs create a rhythm between presence and absence.
Under UV light and in darkness, hidden pigments reveal another dimension of the painting, echoing its central idea: not everything that exists can be seen at first glance.
