Echoes of the White North, Original Artwork

£400.00

Echoes of the White North was inspired by a documentary about polar bears that had moved into an abandoned weather station in the Russian Arctic.

What stayed with me was the extraordinary sight of these wild animals making themselves at home inside a place once occupied by people. In this painting, a mother polar bear sits with her cubs around the weathered structure — some emerging from the building, as though the abandoned rooms have become part of their new territory.

The contrast between the decaying man-made environment and the quiet presence of the bears fascinated me. What was once a place of human activity has been reclaimed by nature.

Rather than portraying the Arctic as an untouched wilderness, the painting reflects on adaptation, motherhood, survival and the traces we leave behind. The bears bring life back into an abandoned space, creating a scene that is both unexpected and strangely tender.

Expressive layers, distressed surfaces and touches of turquoise echo the weathered character of the building, while the mother and cubs remain the emotional centre of the composition.
