Hidden Palace is inspired by Lillafüred in north-east Hungary, one of my favourite places in my home country. Surrounded by forest, waterfalls and the dramatic landscape of the Bükk Mountains, the palace seems to appear almost magically through the trees.
Rather than painting the scene literally, I wanted to capture the feeling of discovering it — a glimpse of architecture hidden within layers of colour, light and nature. The palace emerges softly from the dense foliage, almost like a memory: present, yet partly concealed.
Built through expressive, textured mark-making and rich layers of colour, the painting moves between representation and abstraction. Reds, greens, blues and flashes of yellow overlap and mingle, while the pale architecture provides a quiet point of light at the heart of the composition.
For me, Hidden Palace is also a painting about home, memory and belonging. Lillafüred is a place I have always loved, and painting it allowed me to reconnect with the beauty of Hungary through my own contemporary visual language.
